Oli vähän vaikeaa löytää aikaa keikkarapsan kirjoittamiselle, mutta lopultakin sain sen johoinkin vaiheeseen. Mutta hei, kuinka te olette kiertäneet tuon hymiöongelman, eli kaikki pienet aa-kirjaimet muuttuvat tyhmiksi a hymiöiksi? Sen rapsa kun on englanniksi, ja en ajatellut editoida tekstiä siten että saisin kaikki nuo aat sieltä veke.

Bruce Springsteen at Helsinki Olympic Stadium, Finland, Friday July 12th, 2024

Everybody Form a Line!

Soon after the 2023 European tour ended there started to be rumours about tour on next summer too, and during October it was clear that there will be shows in Europe in 2024. When the show days in Sweden were found out, I was a little slow when trying to book a hotel and instead of getting some super expensive lodgings now, I decided to wait a little. And then lo, it was announced that there would be a show in Helsinki too! So, let's forget Sweden this time and let's concentrate just to this one Finnish show!

Time passes, and now it is already summer, and the tour is going on. I have heard that the set lists are far from as rigid as last summer, and also Springsteen himself has been more lively now. Was it a right choice to get just one show ticket? Perhaps not, but anyway, let's take all out from this show! And let's try to get as good spot in front of the stage as possible, and the way to do that of course is to queue. I have never been in the queue for more than a day or two, but let's do it really seriously this time.

We Finns decide to wait a little before starting the line with its roll call routine, and so a small group of foreigners manage to start it before we did. But we join them, agree on their rules and promise to help as much as possible, and guess what, I have number SEVEN drawn with red ink on my hand now! I have never had even closely this small number before this!

With three roll calls a day at very decent times, the line starts to grow steadily. How nice it is to hang in this park close to Olympic Stadium and Paavo Nurmi statue, see familiar faces and make new friends, chat with everyone and then tell them three times a day "Everybody form a line"! First we had just one line with less than 50 fans, then two lines and then several more as people keep on arriving here from all over Finland, and also all over the world. We also get some rain and my car breaks down at the most inconvenient moment, but those are luckily just minor problems.

Finally, it is the day of the show! We still keep the line until it has 500 names in it. Now we form the line and do the roll call for the very last time for this show, and get walked close to the gates. This far I have been still in full "let's take care of the queue and roll calls" mode, but now I can feel that I am changing into the "oh wow, we are really seeing Springsteen in few hours, scream, giggle!" mode.

After a little wait we get a very polite security check, our weird online LippuPASS tickets are checked and our line moves to a fenced area, where we can listen to the soundcheck. It is hard to hear, I don't recognize all the songs, but from the ones I get, it seems that we might get a nice setlist today. After it we are allowed to walk again and now we are inside the empty stadium itself.

Now I face the hard part: which spot should I choose? Do I want to stand somewhere on the sides, where Bruce will get closest to the audience, or perhaps as close to the center of the stage as possible? Standing at the front rail at the end of that middle catwalk has been in my bucket list since the first E Street Band show I have seen, and so yes, there I will go as there seems to be room for me too! Someone reminds that during the show we will be visible on the big screens. Oh yes, we sure will! Let's make sure we are worth it, and remember to sing and dance like this was the last show we will ever see!

Next three hours go smoothly, as it isn't too hot or cold and we can easily still use the toilets and buy water to drink, or fill our bottles from the tap. Besides, I'm now surrounded by folks, who haven't heard all of my stories from the shows I have seen, and so we will entertain each others by trying to recall our funniest, weirdest or most stupid memories from different shows. Steven's guitar technician comes to front rail to meet someone he knows, and hands guitar pics to everyone. Oh cool, it is marbled black and grey, and there is "Little Steven" printed in golden letters on it!

Pit rush happens at about half past six, but with my back at the front fence, I do not have to stand up yet. Some others people keep on sitting calmly too, and some, who already stood up, will sit again after a while. We start getting up and stretching our legs when there is only half an hour for the show time. Let's see... cameramen are already getting ready and Kevin Buell is there checking one of Bruce's guitars. He gets a huge applaud. Other technicians are also seen, and oh, suddenly there's Roy Bittan! And behind him the other band members start arriving, and oh oh oh, there is Bruce! It is only five to eight, and the show has started already now!

The first song is Lonesome Day, and I love it, and I sing along and jump up and down. But instead of concentrating on the song, I'm right now concentrating on Bruce himself. He is again a little older and little stiffer, but he is still here. And not just "here", but he is really present. He is still the band leader, the singer songwriter, the front man who captivates all of his audience - and I have one of the very best places in this crowd of 42 000 people to witness his performance tonight! Bruce, you had me at your very first guitar stroke.

And what a thrill, what a joyride it is to be here surrounded by all these folks who feel just the same as I do! Everyone knows the lyrics, everyone knows the moves, and everyone of us, both here in the audience and on the stage, take part into something which is not just your regular gig, but this is something far bigger. This is how it feels when you are really alive. And oh look, aren't we already quickly shown on the screens?

I had seen setlists from previous shows, but I had tried not to read them too thoroughly and so I really didn't know which songs I should expect to hear tonight, and that really adds to the magic here. My Love Will Not Let You Down and Prove It are both kind of nice surprises to me, although they had been played a lot, and Two Hearts is just another happy song to dance for me tonight, as I do not know that it hasn't been played too often recently, and that it wasn't on the printed setlist. Some local guys had a big cardboard sign for it in the back parts of the pit, and that might have helped it to be played tonight.

Now were are reaching the part where Bruce is remembering George Theiss, his late band mate from the Castiles, and although his speech is lovely to hear, do we really have to watch at the Finnish subtitles on the screens now? Uhh, this really makes it harder to stay in the right mood and I try to look down and just listen so that I would not see the screens, as I really do not want to see the texts now. I know that this is a part of the shows last summer, but still, I truly don't like this. It would have been much better without subtitles.

Oh, they are over now and we are going to the Promised Land now, hand in the air everyone! Bruce walks along the front rails, and the harmonica solo ends just when he is in the corner in front of a family, and their young son gets Bruce's harmonica, wow and congratulations! Everybody's got a Hungry Heart, but oh, what is this next intro? Oh cool, the bullet mic version of Reason to Believe, and what a haunting bluesy version filled with aggression, frustration and sadness this is! This is one of the strongest moment during this night for me. It is followed by about as strong Youngstown.

Long Walk Home! This was soundchecked, and luckily they decided to play it for us tonight. This is another strong song and I have always loved this live version. Only later I hear that it hasn't been played for about ten years before this show. Then back to the funnier and happier songs with Working on the Highway and Darlington County. E Street Shuffle, I love it! And what a setlist, I didn't except to hear just rarities, and now I get about everything (well, except just some rarities) I could have ever imagined I'd like to hear.

I love how well this show is built, and how perfectly Bruce himself can still perform. He can still sing all of these songs, he can effortlessly hit the high notes when he wants, and he doesn't need to keep breaks. Everyone else in the band can leave the stage for a song or few at least once during the show, but Bruce just keeps on going. He also takes care of most of the guitar solos himself, and Nils gets two and Steven none tonight. The five men strong horn section is arranged so perfectly, and these background singers are also used so nicely. One of that group, Curtis King, gets his spot in the soul cover Nightshift.

Oh, the River is played already here, right after My Hometown and not later in the show? Oh, just listen to Bruce's voice in this one! Wait, why are band members leaving now, is it already time for the encore break? No, but Bruce takes an acoustic guitar and just him and Barry Danielian on trumpet do a beautiful Last Man Standing (and again the annoying subtitles can be seen).

Band returns to the stage, and a majestic Backstreets follow. After this, we get an expected hit parade, and well, that's actually what I really wanted to hear tonight! I want to rock and roll with these guys who have been really my soundtrack for decades. I do not need any more songs which make me thing of Bruce getting old, and I do not want to think my own age. No, but I want to feel that I'm alive! The ghost of all the past years, all the past shows, past friends and Bruce's past bandmates are all present tonight, but blood is really running in my veins now, and my joints and muscles make me jump and dance. Tomorrow I might regret some of my moves, but that's only tomorrow, not tonight!

There is no real encore pause, but the band just stops playing for few moments, and then continue with BitUSA without leaving the stage. BtR, Bobby Jean, DitD. Yes, we heard these same songs and mainly in the same order last year too, but that was already a year ago and these are again just as fresh as when I first heard them live. During 10th Ave we get to see pics of Clarence and Danny from the time the E Street Band started until their last tours with this band.

There is always energy left to dance when we hear Twist and Shout, and when it ends, the band leaves. This was it, right - oh, Bruce takes again an acoustic guitar, and I should have remembered that this will end with a solo version of I'll See You In My Dreams.

This time I do not know if Bruce and I will be seeing each others outside my dreams, where we have met rather regularly for the last 20 years or so, but tonight that doesn't feel that bad. I have just seen the hard rockin', earth quakin', booty shakin' E Street Band and I have had the time of my life during this really rocking show, and although this is my only Bruce show this summer, I have still tasted "tour life" during nearly a full week while we did those roll calls. What else could I wish right now? And besides, we already know that there will be European shows next summer too!

Kitarateknikko Kevin kävi soittelemassa jotain rumpustandin edessä ennen keikan alkamista. Biisinpätkässä oli jotain tuttua, ei Brucea vaan jotain muuta, tunnistitteko?
Kukas soitti rumpuja ja oliko muitakin lavalla?

Kiitos Liisa keikkarapsasta! Minäkään en pitänyt screenillä pyörineistä käännöksistä, jotka tuntuivat tökeröiltä (viime kesänä Ullevilla ne eivät häirinneet läheskään samassa määrin, mihin kielikin vaikuttanee). Olin pitissä tällä kertaa sen verran kaukana lavasta, että minun oli onneksi helppo jättää käännökset huomiotta ja vain keskittyä Brucen puheeseen.

No niin,minäkin ajattelin laittaa tänne vähän tuntojani tästä keikasta,ennen kuin kaikki unohtuu. Tämä Hgin Keikkani oli n. 15. Bruce-keikkani,ensimmäinen oli -93 Tukholmassa. Sen jälkeen on joka rundilla tullut käytyä,joillakin kiertueilla olen nähnyt useammankin vedon.

Tähän keikkaan lähdin asenteella että koska aika ja sen myötä ikä tekee vääjämättömästi työtään kaikkien meidän osalta, myös Bruce vanhenee, ja tämä saattaa olla hyvin todennäköisesti viimeinen kerta kun Bruce ja bändi rundaavat,ainakaan maailman laajuisesti. Myös jo viime vuonna näkemäni pätkät Brucen vedoista sekä haastatteluista kertoivat karua kieltään siitä että Brucekaan ei ole päässyt pakoon ikäänsä: miehessä alkaa olla huomattavia papparais-viboja ja kaikki hidastuu. Lähdin siis jättämään jäähyväisiä Brucelle,jonka musiikki on ollut minulle todella merkityksellistä 13-vuotiaasta saakka kun silloin siihen tutustuin. Jäähyväisten jättäminen ei koskaan ole helppoa, mutta kaikki olemme alisteisia vuosille, ja sille emme voi mitään. Minulla ei toisaalta ollut tälle keikalle mitään odotuksia siitä miten se voisi olla "parempi","yllätyksellisempi", fyysisesti kovempi tms. verrattuna mihinkään aiempaan näkemistäni sillä jotkut niistä ovat olleet tosi kovia juttuja. Tiesin että Bruce ei voi enää heittää sellaisia keikkoja kuin ennen. En siis odottanut oikeastaan mitään, vaan halusin oikeastaan nähdä vielä vanhan "ystävän" mahdollisesti viimeistä kertaa

Tähän lähtötilanteeseen nähden olin yllättynyt näkemästäni ja kokemastani. Bruce ja bändi heittivät erittäin hyvän keikan. Bruce oli skarppina ja tosiaan läsnä koko keikan ajan. Laulu sujui ehkä alun pienen himmailun jälkeen hienosti ja oli tosi sujuvaa myös kovemmissa biiseissä. Biisien välissä ei paljon taukoja pidetty ja meno oli tiukkaa. Brucen omat soolot menivät välillä hyvin ja välillä vihkoon,mutta siihenhän on totuttu jo viimeisen 20 vuoden ajan. Ei tämä keikka ollut siinäkään mielessä niitä huonoimpia. Max jaksoi rummuttaa voimalla vieläkin ja oikeastaan kaikkien ja soitto ja laulu Nilsiä lukuunottamatta oli todella hyvää.

Nils heitti visuaalisesti yleisöä innostavat BTN ja Youngstown soolot mutta ne kuulostivat omaan korvaan aivan hirveiltä. Kun aikaisemmilla kiertueilla niissä on ollut jokin punainen lanka - melodia tai intensiivisyyden asteittainen kasvattaminen - nyt niissä ei ollut päätä ei häntää. Vanhasta oli jäljellä ainoastaan tilutuksen nopeus. Vääriä nuotteja tuli kasapäin ja soolot olivat täyttä sekasotkua. Pelkästään tämän keikan nähtyäni sanoisin että Nilsille ei ehkä tämäntyyppisiä sooloja kannattaisi enää antaa soitettavaksi. Se on sääli sillä juuri esim Youngstownin soolospotti nosti ennen mm. Ullevin fiiliksen hirveisiin sfääreihin.

Reason To Believestä hain punaista lankaa oikeastaan koko biisin ajan sitä kuitenkaan löytämättä. Soitto ja lauluhan menivät tosi hyvin ja yllätysmomenttiahan tästä sovituksesta löytyi. Mutta mitä järkeä on sovittaa tällainen alunperin synkkä tilitysbiisi joksikin isoksi ja "mukaansa tempaavaksi" iloiseksi blues-pohjaiseksi iloitteluksi ja keksiä kaikille bändin jäsenille siihen jotain soitettavaa? Vaikka lähes kaikki biisit pystyykin tuollaiseksi sovittamaan se ei silti tarkoita että niin kannattaisi tehdä. Tämän bändin ei tsrvitse todistrlla enää mitään tuollaisilla tempuilla. Myös Nilsin slidekitara meni tässä biisin loppupuolella kauas hyvän maun tuolle puolen. Jotenkin jännä että joskus niin tyylikkäästi soittanut mies on unohtanut vanhemmiten että yleensä less is more

Hakeuduin stadikalla miksauspöydän kieppeille josta saatoin kuunnella keikkaa niin kuin soundimielessä "oli tarkoitettu". Pystyin näin vähän etäämmältä saamaan mielestäni myös visuaalisemman kokonaiskuvan siitä mitä lavalla tapahtuu myös screenien kautta. Joskus eka riveissä heiluessani minua on jäänyt harmittamaan kuinka rajoittunut oli se näkymä minkä bändiin ja musaan sain - en koskaan onnistunut näkemään screenille valittuja close-uppeja pikku jutuista tai toisessa päässä olevan bändin jäsenen tekemiä juttuja. Olin siis keskimmäisessä seisomakatsomossa. Pittiliput jäivät tarkoituksella ostamatta sillä halusin nyt saada paremmin kokonaiskuvaa

Yleisesti ottaen keikan miksaus ja soundit olivat tasokasta ja hyvää mutta yksittäisiä lapsuksia kuitenkin riitti: Nilsin soolojen alta ei juuri muuta ääntä kuulunut ja useat Brucen biiseissä olevat teemat ja riffit unohdettiin miksata kuuluviin. Esimerkkinä vaikka Backstreetsin käyntiin lähdettyä tuleva Brucen soittama teema. Aika peruskauraa,en ymmärrä miksei miksaaja päässyt näihin mukaan. Kolmen-neljän kitaran miksaus kuitenkin oli saatu hyvin kuriin eikä soundi puuroutunut tältä osin.

Aloitusbiisinä Lonesome Day ei minusta toiminut. Se ei toisaalta ollut heti kärkeen koko stadionin räjäyttävä kaikkien tuntema biisi eikä toisaalta myöskään mikään harvinainen hard core faneille suunnattu tunnelma/tykitys pala. My Love tai ehkä harvinaisemmista joku Night tai tunnetuimmista Badlands olisi voinut toimia. No, luultavasti oli kyse keikan poliittisten "teemojen" mukaisesta biisistä (?) mutta itselle ei toiminut.

Keikan biisilistahan oli oikeastaan Greatest Hits-painotteinen. Kun nämä samat Dancingit ja Badlandsit on todistanut livenä tarpeeksi monta kertaa,niissä ei ole enää sitä tunnustuksellista raakuutta, vaan niistä tulee jonkinlaista rutiinia,joissa yleisönkin tulee toimia aina jotain kaavaa noudattaen ja se ei vaan itselle toimi. Etäisyys siihen että biisin kokee uutena tekee sen että biisin sanat eivät enää liikuta kuin silloin joskus ennen. Ongelma on varmasti lähinnä omassa itsessä mutta tiettyjä biisejä kun on kuullut monta kertaa, niiden alkuperäinen palo ja viesti eivät enää välity tuoreena. Se on oikeastaan mahdottomuus. Siksi Greatest Hits ei olisi oikein kiinnostanut. Mutta versiothsn olivat suht hyviä joten ilo oli kuitenkin niitä katsella ja kuunnella.

Long Walk Homesta tykkäsin. Magic-kiertueella tämä ei ollut lempipalojani mutta nykyiseen USAn poliittiseen ilmastoon - miksei myös Suomen - peilattaessa oli tosi hyvä veto. Tarvitsemme kaikki muistutusta siitä keitä me olemme,mihin uskomme ja mitä asioita me ja aiemmat sukupolvet ovat halunneet pitää kiveen kirjoitettuna.

Toinen biisi mistä erityisesti tykkäsin ja joka oli jossain määrin uusi juttu oli Ghosts. Tietynlainen ilo meidät jättäneiden ihmisten tuntemisesta ja mukana pitämisestä edelleen välittyi tarttuvassa kertosäkeistössä. Vaikka taustaidea liittyi keikan kuolevaisuuden teemaan,siitä ei tullut surullinen vaan pikemminkin voimaantunut fiilis. Tälllaisia voimaantumisen fiiliksiä Bruce on aina pystynyt hyvillä keikoillaan antamaan,onneksi myös tällä kertaa!

Workingistä ja Darlingtonista tykkäsin myös. Nämä kaksi muodostivat hyvä parivaljakon ja oli hienoa nähdä Brucen,bändin ja yleisön rentoa soittamisen ilon jakamista. Nämä biisit sopivat täysin kesäiltaan stadionilla,BITUSAn mini-versiolle en oikeastaan nähnyt mitään tilausta keikalla. BITUSA-levystä tuli monta raitaa (6?) ,liekkö Brucella ollut eka Suomen keikastaan muistikuvia että stadion ja viileät suomalaiset lämmitetään juuri niillä?

Ennalta odotin että keikalla tulee jotenkin alleviivattuna kuolevaisuuden ja menettämisen teemaa mutta loppujen lopuksi minulle jäi mieleen vain iloinen hittipotpuri,kaunis kesäpäivä,yllättävän pirteä ikääntynyt porukka soittamassa (ja kuuntelemassa!) sekä eturivin lapsen loistavat silmät huuliharpun saadessaan. Ehkä sen pitikin mennä näin. Jos tämä oli viimeinen kosketuksemme Bruce-keikkoihin,se oli täynnä elämäniloa oleva,Brucen live-uraa hyvin kuvastava illanvietto jossa musiikin jakamisen ilo Brucen ja yleisön välissä oli käsin kosketeltavaa. Tätä yhteyttähän kumpikin osapuoli on aina halunnut vaalia ja kasvattaa.

Nyt Tukholman reissun jälkeen ehdin vähän paneutumaan Hgin jälkilpuintiin ja on kyllä kivaa lukea kaikkia fiiliksiä ja keikkahavaintoja täällä.

itselleni hyvin paljon ihan uusia puolia ja kulmia avaavia tarkkoja musiikillisia ja dramaturgisia keikkahuomioita, niin biisilistasta kuin Brucestakin, joita en ole tullut noin edes ajatelleeksikaan vaikka tältä kiertueelta useampikin keikka on tullut nähtyä.

Kiitos Jukka K, kun nostit Luckyn postauksen ! Ja tietysti kiitos Lucky, ihan samat tunnelmat oli minulla! Minua suoraan sanoen jännitti ennen keikkaa, että mitähän tulee... Mutta tuli aivan mieletön keikka! Nautin tosi kovasti, vaikka olin takakentällä, ja ihan itsekseen siellä sai Hungry Heartia ja Thunder Roadia lauleskella Mutta tilaa oli hyvin heilua, ja se musiikkiahan on aivan törkeän siistiä (vieläkin)
